Orthodontic Treatments

Orthodontics is very simple and easy. The teeth are twisted using iron tools or membranes and they are easily put into the right place.

If it was this simple, a three-year specialisation training in orthodontic treatments would not be needed in addition to five years of studying dentistry. In moving the teeth, many things must be paid attention to, such as temporomandibular joints and occlusio. Orthodontics is not simply moving the teeth. It can be carried out orthodontic appliances, such as braces that are attached to the teeth or with aligners made of a transparent membrane that are kept in the mouth.

In Helmiäinen Dental Clinic, a dental specialist Jukka Kurimo operates as the orthodontist, and he has a lot of work experience from Tampere University Hospital, for example. By making an appointment with Jukka, we can assess what the best treatment option would be for you.

What is orthodontics with Invisalign?

At Helmiäinen Dental Clinic, we use the Invisalign or ClearCorrect technique. The teeth are aligned using transparent, detachable membranes – which are almost like invisible orthodontic braces.

Traditional braces are attached to the surface of the teeth and are visible. The aligners are not completely invisible, but they are not as easily noticeable as traditional braces. The aligners are also detachable so you can eat and drink more freely during the treatment, and it is easier to look after oral hygiene.

However, the aligners are not suitable for all situations, and especially demanding teeth aligning must still be done by using traditional brackets and orthodontic arch wires.

How does orthodontics using the aligners proceed?

Orthodontics using the aligners takes approximately 9-15 months. During the treatment, on average 18-30 different aligners are used. One set of aligners is used for approximately two weeks.

The aligners can be taken out only for eating, drinking and brushing your teeth. By changing the aligners, your teeth will gradually move until the desired final position has been achieved. A control appointment is needed approximately every six weeks to ensure that the treatment is progressing according to plan. In conventional orthodontics, control appointments and activation of the arch wires is needed in the same way.
